CENTURY-OLD SASSANIAN STANDS STRONG
Sassanian & Co. was established in 1913 as K.R. Sasanian Bakery and Restaurant (wedding cakes were a specialty). It has evolved over the decades and now serves traditional Parsi food as well as Chinese food, burgers, and sizzlers. The bakery sells items such as bread pudding, fresh pineapple cakes, and the famous golden brown lagan-nu-custard.

Though it’s much better lit now, not much else has changed at Sassanian & Co. since 2005 when we would troop in from college to devour the affordable combos – fried rice and manchurian or dhansak along with a cold drink. The wooden chairs and marble top tables are as old as the restaurant; the original advert of 1913 and pictures of Persian monuments are relatively recent additions. Glass-paneled walls give the illusion of an extended space. I wish something similar could be done about your stomach: a meal of chicken cutlets, dhanshaak and rose milkshake is sure to test its elasticity.
But you can’t leave Sassanian without stepping into the bakery next door. Glass shelves showcase wobbly red jelly in plastic cups, bright yellow bread pudding in tin foil containers, fresh pineapple cakes and the famous golden brown lagan-nu-custard. Curd containers in two sizes occupy a corner, a reminder of Sassanian’s role in the previous century as a provision store. Even if you’re too full for dessert, pack some of their flaky nankhatai and soft mawa loaf for family and earn quick brownie cake points.
