LOOK UP AT THE GLITTERING CEILINGS AT MOTH CLUB
WORDS BY RASHI WADHERA
Yes, the ceiling is headline worthy. Gold, glitter and just goddamn beautiful.
Situated on a side street across the road from a giant Tesco’s, Hackney’s fairly new poster child for eclectic nightspots with a touch of history is MOTH. Not like the insect; it stands for Memorable Order of Tin Hats.
As a quick catch up, Memorable Order of Tin Hats (M.O.T.H) was founded in 1972 as a brotherhood of sorts for former front-line soldiers in South Africa. It has since become a network of members’ clubs for military veterans, and this is Hackney’s branch.
The crew behind the Shacklewell Arms in Dalston is responsible for the space’s makeover. They partnered with MOTH to create a sort of creative community in Hackney, complete with eclectic nights outs featuring some of the best DJs, bands, live music sets and, lo and behold, bingo nights, game shows, race nights, film screenings and cabaret events.
You can tell they’ve kept tradition intact but refurbished it to give it a modern uplift. There are two rooms, the headlining gold ceiling is in the back room. Complete with a stage and a good ol’ dance floor. The front room is more staid (in comparison anyway), with softer music and seating. Absolutely perfect for mid gig breaks!
All that glitters could just be MOTH.
